Home Office Vibes

I’m always about creating a vibe when I design and organize a space, often inspired by a few key pieces with special meaning. Function is a consideration too. For example, the reclaimed wood tables and mantel my husband built in our living room scream rustic and relaxed. A large, fluffy sectional, a hold over from my previous townhouse, is the perfect spot for reading and meditating. My collection of fashion and design magazines help make it my space for creative inspiration. And the window overlooking our ever-evolving garden and the mountains beyond also help make it my gratitude space.

Even before the pandemic, I worked from home. A private office was a must-have when we purchased our home three years ago. My office is small, so maximizing space is essential. When we got ready to move in, I fell in love with a rustic wood and metal desk with a crank to raise and lower it. Around the same time my husband bargained for a circa 1940s Remington Rand typewriter from a local antiques market. Starting with those two pieces my office vibe was born. Soon followed a metal replica console table and a giant clock (which became a nice backdrop for Teams calls).

If you are like me, you probably work best in a clean clear space, which can be a challenge in a small office. Creative storage is essential. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or cut into your office vibe. To address this issue, my husband built chunky cedar shelves and hung them above the console. He nailed wire file baskets to rustic boards and hung them under the window. In the closet, he installed a countertop and shelves, which now house the printer and a charging station. I’d love to say I’m always hyper organized, but that’s purely aspirational on my part. Keeping clutter out of sight therefore is the key to professional happiness for me. It always has been dating back to my cubicle days. I was the one with the sparse desk, everything tucked in a drawer with few personal items. I’d often hear comments that it looked like no one worked there. That was exactly the vibe I was going for.

Today is a little different. I keep my shelves stocked with books, photos and other pieces that inspire me. A photo of my grandparents the year they got married (which also happens to be the year my vintage typewriter was made). A small stone Buda. The Four Agreements, my favorite book. There’s a few more but they key is not to overdo. My desk stays clear with only the essentials, most of the time. I feel relaxed, productive, creatively inspired. It feels good to be happy where I work. With a short commute, lots of fab coffee, and a joyful dog and cranky cat as coworkers, how could it possibly feel bad.
